great book

This book has an interesting plot that has full of adventure on how Sheriff Pikachu becomes a hero of his town. I found this book charming and I do believe he loves it when I read it to him. Overall, this is a great story and on my top list for my bed time story books. The illustrations are adorable and I think a lot of pokemon fans would love this book. My son loves pikachu, so I decided to purchase this book for him.

The book combines theme and genre analysis, highlighting Ortese's adoption and hybridization of diverse literary forms such as poetry, the novel, the short story, the essay, autobiography, realism, fairy tales, fantasy, allegory. In her work Ortese weaves an ongoing dialogue with literary and non-literary works, through direct quotations, allusions, echoes, adoption of motifs and topoi. The book thus highlights the intertextual relationship with her sources: Leopardi, Dante, Petrarch, Manzoni, Collodi, Montale, Serao; Shakespeare, Milton, Keats, Blake, Joyce, Conrad, Melville, Poe, Hawthorne, Hardy; Manrique, Gongora, de Quevedo, Villalon, Bello, Cantar del mio Cid; Heine, Valery, Puccini's Madam Butterfly, folklore, popular songs, and the Bible. Ortese thus shapes her literary themes in the background of social, political and economic upheavals over six decades of Italian history, culminating in an allegorical critique of modernity and a call for a renewed bond between humans and the Other.

About the Author

Vilma De Gasperin was born and brought up in Italy and studied English and German for her degree at the University of Padova. She then moved to Britain where she taught Italian language at the University of Plymouth. She completed her doctoral thesis on Anna Maria Ortese at the University of Oxford and was granted her D.Phil in Italian Literature in 2007. She has completed an M.Litt. in the History of the Italian language, and has published articles on Anna Maria Ortese and Vivian Lamarque. In 2011 she edited a collection of essays on the Italian language and in 2003 she published a collection of poetry. De Gasperin is Senior Language Instructor in Italian at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages and the Language Centre at the University of Oxford, and she is College Lecturer in Italian at Exeter College.

Superb and Concise History of Railroads Around the World

I ordered this book because my husband is a railroad enthusiast, and I knew that he would be able to help me review it honestly. In addition, the is a DK book, and for those unfamiliar with DK travel books, they are a delight. Although other books may provide more text, DK books offer a wealth of photos, maps, and drawings.

This book, "The Iron Road" by Christian Wolmar, has exceptional drawings, photos, maps, and graphics, but in addition, it provides a superb and detailed text. The book is divided into five sections, each dealing with an aspect of railroads around the world in chronological order. Many books have examined the engineering of railroads, but this one also deals with the human aspect of railroad construction, especially the intrigue and greed that form the backdrop of many railroads. Most readers, unless they are well acquainted with railroad history, are unaware of the human cost of rail expansion, not only in the United States but around the world. Wolmar recounts this human cost with compassion and insight, never over-dramatizing it, but making sure the reader does not dismiss it.

In Australia, for example, rather than standardize the track width, 22 track widths were used, a case study in how not to create a railroad network. Why did this happen? Every rail baron wanted to be first to get his piece of the railroad action. This greed precluded cooperation and set Australia's rail system back decades.

The transformative effect of railroads on society cannot be overestimated. In addition to travel, industry, and commerce, the impact of railroads on war, especially the American Civil War and in Europe, World War II, is covered in detail. The role of rail transport in the mass deportation of entire populations to prison and extermination camps in Germany, France, Poland, and China is recounted. Railroads in Asia and Russia are significant, too. This book reads more like an adventure story than a history; indeed, if history were taught this way in schools, many more of us would know it and learn from it.

I recommend this highly readable book to anyone who is looking for a good general history of railroads around the world. An expert will likely know most of what is in this book, but the general reader will not. This is a perfect book for the general reader.

splendid photos and equally splendid text - a welcome change!

Most DK books, in particular the hefty WWI volume I just reviewed, are cluttered with graphics and precious little text. This book offers splendid photos and equally splendid text. Thank you!

The author has written many books about trains, so the reviewer who lamented that this book leaves out a lot of the U.S. history of trains but concedes that would be a book in itself is right -- and there is a book dedicated just to that.

Christian Wolmar is one of the best writers of nonfiction I've come across. His prose is engaging and readable. He knows and loves his stuff. If only all teachers could love their subject this much and communicate as much information without boring their students, we might not be drugging so many kids for attention-deficit disorders.

This book has specific details that even my husband, lifelong railroad enthusiast, hadn't read before. Negotiating curves, for example: a line drawing diagrams the angle of the flange that allows the train to lean into a bend like a bicyclist leaning into a corner. I'm drawn to photographs of the workers and old travel posters, and the quotes from skeptics and surprised passengers who didn't faint at the incredible speed of 25 miles per hour.

Wolmar has written a series of books on railroad history, and this book makes me want to read them all. He also speaks at conferences? I will be watching for events in my area.

A marvelously engaging look at the history and development of railroads!

"Of all the great inventions of the Industrial revolution, the railroads had the greatest impact." This is the opening line of the introduction to the "Iron Road: An Illustrated History of the Railroad." The author then goes on to make his case in a very entertaining and thoroughly convincing manner.

This book is profusely illustrated and written in a very engaging and informational style. The first chapter details the invention of rail roads, and the subsequent use of steam engines as the source of motive power beyond horses. The author goes far beyond mere technical details and explores the sociological impact and benefits to modernization of human society and well being. The dark side is touched on as well: use as military transport for consolidation of nations, and the use of trains to move large numbers of men and materiel in wartime.

John Gerring (PhD, University of California, Berkeley, 1993) is Professor of Political Science at Boston University, where he teaches courses on methodology and comparative politics. His books include Party Ideologies in America, 1828-1996 (Cambridge University Press, 1998), Case Study Research: Principles and Practices (Cambridge University Press, 2007), A Centripetal Theory of Democratic Governance (Cambridge University Press, 2008), Concepts and Method: Giovanni Sartori and His Legacy (Routledge, 2009), Social Science Methodology: Tasks, Strategies, and Criteria (Cambridge University Press, 2011), Global Justice: A Prioritarian Manifesto (in process), and Democracy and Development: A Historical Perspective (in process). He served as a fellow of the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton, NJ), as a member of The National Academy of Sciences' Committee on the Evaluation of USAID Programs to Support the Development of Democracy, as President of the American Political Science Association's Organized Section on Qualitative and Multi-Method Research, and is the current recipient of a grant from the National Science Foundation to collect historical data related to colonialism and long-term development.

the reading was kind of fun. Not because of the subjects touched

My first actions after finishing this book were.

Checking if there were books available before that one (yes I admit I do not check frequently on that stuff before – as I try to read without being tempted to read other reviews before)

And than jumping to amazon to get my own copy of the first two books

I think that says quite a lot about my opinion on this book …

Even if the nature of the story is rather serious, the reading was kind of fun. Not because of the subjects touched, but because of the writing. It was fluent and flawless and the story was well constructed. I know that I was missing a lot of the background to Sean’s character as I did not read the first two books, but honestly that did not matter so much. This book is so well designed that it can be read as a standalone if needed and it made me want to read the first two books. So it does not even matter that I know their outcome due to reading this book.

The author manages to captivate you in this tiny world out there in the woods and its only after you finish when you realize that you do not know really that much about the background of the characters or that it was actually almost a kind of instant love that “happened” to Grace and Sean. Which is a real good thing – because I have serious issues with instant love

Please let me recommend this author and this book to everybody who likes pure and honest romances as well as a good and solid writing style.

I am off now reading the first parts of this series #waves

Sweet, heartbreaing, and engaging story

Aaaah! If I hadn't already seen info about this book before reading the previous one, I'd have been a cranky reader. The previous story had a cliffhanger but happily it all works out.

There are two central conflicts between Sean and Grace. One is kids: Grace has them, Sean doesn't want any. It's lateish in the story before we find out why Sean is so resistant to having kids and I wish Poitevin had developed that more. The other conflict is that Grace is hiding something and Sean's cop instincts are roused. At one point he's worried that he'll have to arrest her. That could put a hitch in their relatioship. :D The whole story takes place over a week and it just seemed too fast. There was a lot happening and the time frame didn't work. Sean's change of heart about children, Grace's situation, their romance which was both slow burning and rapid, it all happened quickly.

The romance was sweet, the story behind Grace and the kids was heartbreaking, and I wanted Grace and Sean to get together but the relationship and events needed more time to play out. I liked the relationship between Grace and Sean, I liked how strong Grace was both emotionally and physically, she can rescue herself thank you very much, and I enjoyed the peek at Grace and Connor we get. I liked the story but had a hard time buying into how fast everything happens especially considering what the kids have been through. Both Grace and the kids have been on an emotional roller coaster so has Sean with his injury, and I think they all needed time to process and heal. Still, it's a tender story with humor, tension, romance, and action. I definitely prefer Poitevin's romances to her urban fantasy and I liked this one a lot.

An Absolute Must-Have

This book, now in its third edition, has now become the foundation of our field. In studying for the Pediatric Specialty Exam given by the American Physical Therapy Association, we, in our study group, have found this book to be an invaluable compilation of evidence-based therapy for virtually every major pediatric diagnosis requiring physical therapy intervention. We all thank you, Suzanne Campbell, for a thorough job well done.

I have used this book innumeral times in the clinic whereI work. A must have reference for any pediatric therapist. Well worth the money if you are looking to learn more about the special need of children.

Classic reference for pediatric PT

My peds teacher recommended this book and it is awesome. The authors do a very comprehensive look at the literature and quality studies. I have found it very useful in deciding treatment and management courses as well as staging children when they come in in different levels/phases of their particular problems. It is also good in that it can be a starting point for additional research.

Another Educational and Inspirational title from Vicent Versace

I still remember the first time I attended one of Vincent Versace's classes at Photoshop World on his Black and White Conversion technique. Then, as now, I was blown away by his vision for the conversion as well as his approach. So much so, that at the next three Photoshop World's that I attended, I always made a point to attend his class to get a better understanding of his approach and technique as well as try to pick up just one more tidbit.

Now, with From Oz to Kansas: Almost Every Black and White Conversion Technique Known to Man, it's like having his seminar on my desk for reference anytime I need it.

I've always been in awe of Vincent's photography. His color photogrpahic art has always amazed me, but it's his black and white art that I believe he will be best known for years and years from now. His approach is like none other and I've been fortunate enough to sit next to some of today's best known photographers and Photoshop experts and watch their techniques.

What is so refreshing about From Oz to Kansas: Almost Every Black and White Conversion Technique Known to Man, is that Vincent tirelessly explains not only the HOW of each black and white conversion technique, but more importantly, the WHY of each technique. In any pursuit, it is worth asking WHY. We should never just accept a technique because an instructor that we've paid to see says so.

You may, in the end, decide on a technique that gives you the look you want at the expense of throwing away 2/3 of your image data. But you should make that decision KNOWING what you're doing, not just because someone told you or because the Photoshop Action you've downloaded does it. Vincent's book doesn't tell you that his preferred method for conversion is the best. Hardly. Instead, his book lays out for you, how you use each conversion method, along with why and when you should consider it.

This book is about helping you, as a photorapher interested in Black and White as your art form, becoming better at achieving your vision.

Vincent says in the Last Words section, "To reiterate - technique does not define your image; you define it. Once you have determined that definition, then you decide upon which techniques best suit the requirements that you have for that image so that it expresses your voice."

If you are a photographer who is searching for a way to better achieve and reach your vision, then I highly recommend adding this book to your collection. You will not be disappointed. Your black and white prints will be better as a result.

Useful but could be laid out better

As other reviewers have pointed out VV knows his stuff: the book is chock-a-block with technique, theory, wise quotes and philosophy. The techniques are explained in minute detail as are the whys and wherefores. And for me therein lies the rub, and I do think there needs to be some down to earth counterpoint to all the glowing accolades here. I found it needed too much effort to get past the deep and meaningful stuff that I was left feeling that there must be an easier way to glean the meat of the technical know-how.

I had a similar problem with his previous book, and as detailed and intricate as this one is, there are only so many hours in the day and it will take quite a few to sift through that much information presented this way. Some of it looks like slightly pretentious padding or a self justifying attempt to set himself above other writers on technique.

If you want to read a book on how to be true to your own vision, or how important it is to dare to experiment, or what Albert Einstein had to say that's (just about) relevant, or to see any more of the sort of quotes that are found so ubiquitously on Facebook (and eagerly illustrated with VVs personal philosophy) then you might enjoy those digressions, but frankly George DeWolfe does it much more succinctly and less intrusively in his book on printing.

If you are in fact interested in the philosophy of the thing I recommend the likes of Roland Barthes, Susan Sontag, John Berger or any of the many others who devote whole books or essays to the subject rather than interspersing it with distracting techniques, and who do it far more justice.

Obviously what he's trying to emphasise here is that technique alone is not enough, and you need to know when to apply what technique etc, but if you're buying a book subtitled 'almost every black and white conversion technique known to man' then any of that stuff should be superfluous or self-evident.

He does explain in detail how to use techniques which certainly are useful, but I question whether, once the veneer and waffle is stripped out from this book, it is any different to any other on the topic. I don't think it is. Nor do I think he fulfills his claims: there are other methods which he doesn't mention, AFAICS, the most useful of which IMO is a method taught by Martin Henson, who doesn't have a book but does have a DVD and who is refreshingly unpretentious and down to earth) There's only one technique ( the last one) I didn't know in the book, which is enough to make it worthwhile for me, but the rest could still have been enjoyable were it not so ponderous. Also Jeff Schewe's teaches a different method in his book the digital negative, even though it is very close to the last one VV teaches.

Frankly I could do without all the philosophy and theory and would rather have just the nitty gritty in a a more accessible form, though I appreciate that all the info in there is basically good info - but I can't help wondering whether there might have been a way to separate the theory and philosophy from the practical aspects. Probably not, if VV was going doing it.

Perhaps I would prefer this info to be presented in an alternative medium like a DVD (Video), where you could pick chapters stripped of the theory and philosophy, I do understand that the style of this book is integral to his personal vision and that it has its place; Im not arguing that it shouldn't be there at all, just that in the book the techniques feel weighed down rather than expedited by the theory and philosophy and notes and asides.

I found the screenshots too small to read, fortunately I know what they refer to already but someone new to this might find it very irritating. Also he really should get a better proofreader.

I do admire VVs work and his expertise so as far as this book's concerned it could be said simply that his writing style just isn't for me and leave it at that, I accept he does have a lot of really good technical know how in there too, and the book is worth it for that; I just question though whether it couldn't be presented in a more digestible form. I would still recommend it though but with the above reservations.

The download page is hard to find if you miss it first time. In the book he gives the link for downloads (one assumes at the time) as his website - so that's where I expected to find the downloads page - but no - you have to subscribe, which APPEARS to be about providing you access to the site and (you assume) the content mentioned in the book, and yes the email confirmation will then grant you access to his site, but whoa - you just missed it!

Thus looking on his site for the downloads is frustrating as not only is the link to the downloads not there, (AFAICS) but the link on his site- to his new book -doesn't work, it takes you instead to his old books. The text for the links is tiny- so I tried it four times just in case I had missed the url they are so tiny.

Go back to the confirmation email for subscribing and check out the link at the bottom of the subscription confirmation. THAT ids where the downloads page is hidden. Great if you like games but not so much fun otherwise.

Also much of his site appears to be Flash based and Vincent appears to be using a Mac (in the book) so you'd think he'd know better than have his site Flash based.
This probably doesn't matter that much in the event, as I doubt the free plug-ins will work on a PPC Mac and the actions I can create myself easily enough, but it is frustrating that the link in the book for downloads is not clear or specific enough

`From Oz to Kansas: Almost every black and white conversion technique know to man' is nine chapters of Versace's passion to discuss, teach, quote, and inspire the reader about photography and to provide guides on how to optimally use the digital darkroom to create black and white Images.

This book is a repository for black and white information for the technical, the intellectual and the artist. It is amazing to read and to be entertained by his writing style, how-to screen shots, rich illustrations and timely quotes from Einstein to Haas. I found that my own creative workflows were challenged and a new inquisitiveness was engaged in revelations based on a master artist's fundamental knowledge of the digital medium. The how to of his why is your pathway to exploration, and to quote Jay Maisel, 'Think in terms of revelation'.

Here is a sample sentence of a Versace term called Chromatic Grayscale, `Everything on your journey toward understanding the art of science and science of the art of creating a chromatic grayscale image from a full-color one is about to be applied in this next technique'.

There is a section on dynamics range, the zone system, exposing to the right ..But Vince has put them all in a comparison context of a historical baseline to today's current technology. You are not reading a book released based on last years technology. This book is replete with an early adopter's technology understanding of D4 hardware and CS6 software.

Vince goes thru the history of digital black and white conversions, when to use and not use desaturation, what the impact and limitation of LAB conversions are. It's really amazing to find out what your current B&W conversion is really doing to your image and why that B&W look has eluded you. Your journey of education ends up in Chapter Seven, where he provides you with the keys to Kansas, How to use RGB channels separately on a channel mixer and adjustment layer.

The book also provides links to free NIK plug Ins, which work with Vincent's free actions, and downloadable ZIP files of his Images to practice workflows. In the end, this book is a practical guide for all levels of photographers and it should become the definitive book on digital B&W and conversion techniques.
