The Jew In The Medieval World: A Source Book, 315-1791, by Jacob Rader Marcus

To gain an accurate view of medieval Judaism, one must look through the eyes of Jews and their contemporaries. First published in 1938, Jacob Rader Marcus’s classic source book on medieval Judaism provides the documents and historical narratives which let the actors and witnesses of events speak for themselves.

The medieval epoch in Jewish history begins around the year 315, when the emperor Constantine began enacting disabling laws against the Jews, rendering them second-class citizens. In the centuries following, Jews enjoyed (or suffered under) legislation, either chosen or forced by the state, which differed from the laws for the Christian and Muslim masses. Most states saw the Jews as simply a tolerated group, even when given favorable privileges. The masses often disliked them. Medieval Jewish history presents a picture wherein large patches are characterized by political and social disabilities. Marcus closes the medieval Jewish age (for Western Jewry) in 1791 with the proclamation of political and civil emancipation in France.

The 137 sources included in the anthology include historical narratives, codes, legal opinions, martyrologies, memoirs, polemics, epitaphs, advertisements, folk-tales, ethical and pedagogical writings, book prefaces and colophons, commentaries, and communal statutes. These documents are organized in three sections: The first treats the relation of the State to the Jew and reflects the civil and political status of the Jew in the medieval setting. The second deals with the profound influence exerted by the Catholic and Protestant churches on Jewish life and well-being. The final section presents a study of the Jew “at home,” with four sub-divisions with treat the life of the medieval Jew in its various aspects. Marcus presents the texts themselves, introductions, and lucid notes. Marc Saperstein offers a new introduction and updated bibliography.

From the Publisher
First published in 1938, Jacob Rader Marcus's classic source book presents 137 documents that deal with individual Jews and the Jewish community during the Jewish Middle Ages. "The Jew in the Medieval World" is unique for its sweeping view of Jewish historical experience from late antiquity until modern times, with introductions and annotations that make those sources accessible to the general reader. For this new edition, Marc Saperstein has updated Marcus's ninety-six bibliographies, providing references to the most recent scholarly research on each topic. In his cogent introduction, Saperstein analyzes and evaluates Marcus's decision regarding periodization, organization, and inclusion. In so doing, he offers valuable insights about the implications of those decisions for our own understanding of Jewish history.

About the Author
Jacob Rader Marcus served as Adolph S. Ochs Professor of American Jewish History and Milton and Hattie Kutz Distinguished Service Chair in American Jewish History at HUC-JIR, Cincinnati and founded the American Jewish Archives.

amazing
By Michael Lewyn
This amazing book has 96 primary sources - excerpts from books and essays by and about pre-emancipation Jews, discussing topics as varied as Christian and Muslim oppression of Jews, Jewish religious law, Jewish false messiahs, and Jewish education.

Some of the more interesting things I learned:

*That Christian oppression of Jews began almost as soon as Christians took over the Roman Empire. Just a few years after Constantine (Rome's first Christian emperor) took power, he issued relatively mild decrees against Jews converting or intermarrying Christians. A Jew who converted and circumcised a non-Jewish slave could be subject to capital punishment. A century later, Theodosius actually prohibited Jews from erecting new synagogues.

On the other hand, as late as the 1750s Frederick II of Prussia prohibited Jews from establishing private synagogues, and sought to regulate exactly which prayers Jews could engage in.

*Just as Jews sought to distance themselves from Christians, Christians did the same. A 300 Spanish church council prohibited Christians from eating with Jews. And in 325, the Council of Nicaea changed the date of Easter to ensure that Easter's dating was not dependent on the dating of the Jewish Passover. (Some early Christian communities, by contrast, celebrated Easter on the first night of Passover).

*The sheer diversity of Jewish customs over the centuries. Some Jews today think that the most distinctively dressed groups (such as the Hasidim) are the most "traditional" or "authentic" Jews. But a 1748 essay describing Shearith Israel (a still-prospering New York synagogue) writes that "Both men and women were dressed entirely in the English fashion; the former had all of them their hats on." (I visited Shearith Israel a few years ago, and today, hats are still more popular than in other shuls!) . Another essay describes Shabbat dinner in Alexandria, Egypt in the 15th century: Jews drank cups of wine, alternating with fruit, and did not start eating meat, etc. until they had drained six or seven cups!

*In the past as today, Jews struggled with observance, especially while traveling. From a 1748 description of New York Jews: "They commonly eat no pork; yet I have been told by several men of credit, that many of them (especially among the young Jews) when traveling, did not make the least difficulty about eating this, or any other meat that was put before them..."

*The amount of internal self-government in some Jewish communities. In 1637, the Jewish leadership of Lithuania held that in order to prevent Jews from overspending on marriages and other festive occasions, a local rabbi should "consider the number of guests which it is suitable for every individual, in view of his wealth and the occasion, to invite to a festive meal."

*The backwardness of a few Jewish communities. For example, the memoirs of Solomon Maimon describes his elementary school in Mirz, Poland as follows: "[His teacher] was the terror of all young people, `the scourge of God'; he treated those in his charge with unheard of cruelty, flogged them till the blood came, even for the slightest offense ... When the parents of these unfortunates came to him, and took him to task, he struck them with stones and whatever else came to hand, and drove them with his stick out of the house . . . All under his discipline became either blockheads or good scholars." Of course, the book contains an ample selection of essays about Jewish leaders who ensured that better contains prevailed.

The Best Sourcebook!
By VA 6
I haven't read a lot of Sourcebooks, but this is the best I've read on any subject. A True classic and an absolute requirement for anyone studying Judaism in the Middle Ages.

Inconsistent flow, weak characters, editing issues
By ysar
I really wanted to like this one, but the more I read, the more it fell apart. I kept reading for a lot longer than I should have, I think, hoping that something would sway me toward the positive, but I finally just bailed at around 85%.

Shamrocks and Secrets is the story of Christi, a woman of Irish descent being pursued by and eventually falling in love with Patrick, a powerful Irish Mob boss. However, it's overly romanticized and underdeveloped, and it could have used a couple more editors before going to print.

Initially, Christi irritated me with her references to Patrick being in the Mafia instead of the Mob. Yes, Americans more familiar with the Gambinos than the Westies tend to apply Mafia to everything organized crime, but I would have expected a woman of Irish descent to differentiate — or at least for someone in Patrick's family to mention the favored terminology. And I believe Christi was meant to be strong and independent, generally unswayed by Patrick's wealth and power, but after a strong start, she began to lack depth and ended up being more of a two-dimensional representation of those traits. A few of her actions contradicted Patrick, but mostly she allowed herself to be controlled by him, such as when she attempted to leave their first date but ended up being driven back to his penthouse without so much as a grumble to the contrary. Her primary issue with him was her assumption that all men involved in organized crime are unfaithful, as if that's the most dangerous thing about becoming involved with a member of the Mob. Sure, she wasn't thrilled about the criminal side of things, either, but the frequency with which she brought up his apparent need to have numerous affairs made his illegal activity seem like an afterthought.

Patrick's character was just as thin and strangely stereotypical. Rather than work at getting to know her, he started in with expensive and over-the-top displays of his wealth and power immediately upon informally meeting her. While it was later explained that he had known about her for years and simply waited patiently until a time when she was more mature and less naive to begin pursuing her, his staking his claim on her and attempting to woo her with gifts was just too much and too soon to be believed. Christi rather weakly resisted for only a short while before putting aside her principles, and it felt like much of that development was skipped in order to get to the next scene more quickly.

I also quickly became annoyed with the editing issues. Terms of endearment and polite addresses were capitalized, as if Patrick had been knighted by the Queen herself, and for every properly placed semicolon, it seemed there was another sentence in which a comma was incorrectly used instead. To the author's credit, many of the mistakes I noticed were the kind that most people wouldn't catch, but any good editor would have noticed them right away. At the very least, someone with a few extra English classes under the belt would have saved that poor, abused apostrophe from pluralized surnames.

The general flow of the story was pretty inconsistent as well, and it was difficult to tell whether the time between scenes and events was just a few hours or as long as a few weeks. As a result, the plot felt rushed, as if much of getting to the relationship between Christi and Patrick had happened behind the scenes, and we readers were only getting the Cliff Notes version. The pace felt a lot more like a serial, much like single chapters are posted in fanfiction stories, rather than a standard novel, and I have to admit that as soon as Patrick's eyes and hair were described, I had visions of Twilight all-human fanfic. (EDIT: Just went to grab the cover from Goodreads, and the very first review said this one used to be fanfic. I need to start paying attention to these things before I buy. At least then I'd be able to narrow selections to only those authors whose work I know I previously enjoyed, rather than offend someone I probably know.)

I do think the story idea was good, and it had the potential to be very entertaining, even if it strayed from gritty realism. The cover certainly caught my eye, and the synopsis made it sound like a really fun read. But while it fell flat for me, I suspect with some generous substantive and copyediting, it could have been a wonderful story.

Must Read
By Glynda J Daniels
I was so excited to read this book and it didn't disappoint. Cayce Poponea's debut novel is filled with love, romance, and intrigue. Her words are beautifully written and we get an Irish heritage lesson. You really must read this. I guarantee you won't be able to put it down!!!

Love Patrick!
By Booked Every Night
In each and every one of our lives, we all come in contact with memorable people at some point.”
~ Christi

This book was full of memorable characters. I loved the banter between all the characters and that each character played a vital role in the plot, not just the two main characters.

Christi is an Irish girl in Chicago. She works for one of the most successful catering companies and as an amazing family, both blood and chosen family. I loved Christi and her no nonsense attitude. She was feisty, loving, and very protective. She does not put up with anyone’s crap, doesn’t matter if you are the deadbeat father to her niece or the most dangerous man in Chicago. No one is exempt from her temper.

Patrick Malloy is the most powerful and dangerous man in Chicago. He has one weakness…Christi O’Rourke. Christi doesn’t know this at first but she will learn it quickly. One of my favorite things about Patrick is that he doesn’t fight his feelings or attraction to Christi once he knows he is ready for her. I absolutely loved the nicknames that Patrick gives the closest people around him and I love how Christi gets so pissed off about them and so confused on who he is talking about and that just frustrates her even more.

Their love story really isn’t the most conventional but it is still a great love story. There is some drama in this book and it made the book rawer during those parts. My one complaint about this book was everything was leading up to the wedding but when the wedding came it seemed rushed to me. I was hoping to get all the details of that special day. I am hoping the reader will get more insight and details in the next book.

Three Blind Mice (Matthew Hope), by Ed McBain

When three Vietnamese immigrants are found murdered and savagely mutilated in Calusa, Florida, police finger wealthy landowner Stephen Leeds as the prime suspect. The now-deceased trio had recently been acquitted of raping Leeds’s wife, Jessie. From his jail cell, Leeds insists that, while they may have gotten what they deserved, he didn’t dispense the vigilante justice.

That’s enough for attorney Matthew Hope to take on the case. But every piece of evidence ties his client to the grisly killings, from Leeds publicly vowing to avenge his wife’s assault to the discovery of his wallet at the scene. And it doesn’t help matters that Hope is going up against Assistant State Attorney Patricia Demming, who is dead-set on seeing Leeds fry for the crime.

Acclaimed author and fan favorite Ed McBain blends powerful suspense with master storytelling for a thrilling and charged tale of two men—one whose life hangs in the balance and one who must follow a convoluted trail of secrets, seduction, and sabotage to get to the truth.

From Publishers Weekly
Initiating the Matthew Hope series with Goldilocks in 1978, McBain, the author of 40 bestselling 87th-Precinct novels, created another favorite sleuth, hero of macabre fairy tales. In his ninth appearance, the Calusa, Fla., lawyer takes on a "hopeless case," defending Stephen Leeds, arrested for murder. The victims were three Vietnamese tried but found not guilty of raping Leeds's wife, Jessie. Every bit of evidence ties the crimes to Leeds, who had publicly sworn to avenge his wife's abuse, but Hope believes in his client and works diligently to free him. The dangerous search for clues to the killer absorbs the lawyer--and the reader. Small discoveries become significant when Hope piles them into a mountain of evidence against the unsuspected guilty party. As always, McBain's ear-perfect dialogue enhances his masterly plotting.

Matthew Nearly Hopeless In Weak Story
By Bill Slocum
What is it about Ed McBain and romance? It can turn him from Mickey Spillane to Maurice Chevalier in a matter of two or three pages. Here we are treated to a pair of romances, one involving Florida defense attorney Matthew Hope and a Vietnamese interpreter, the other involving a private investigator and a woman who works at the Calusa Tax Collector's office. There's also a murder, of three restaurant employees who raped a woman and then beat the rap.

The Matthew Hope books, which seem to have been brought to a close by McBain in 1998 with the release of "The Last Best Hope," was an excursion on the other side of the criminal justice system by McBain, writer of the "87th Precinct" series of police procedurals. It was a detour in tone, in tempo, in setting, and in character, but for some reason, the Hope novels I read never seemed to benefit from this fresh approach. Unlike the "87th Precinct" books he was writing concurrently, McBain seemed to plot these ones by the numbers, with little interest in what made people tick, until it came to a romantic situation. Then his focus would bore in on cute meets, long walks on the beach, and post-coital cuddles of quiet satisfaction. Often he throws in lovers of different ethnic backgrounds, showing what a liberated guy he is and all that. Meanwhile the killer continues to kill and the reader gets frustrated. Love makes the world go round, but it is more likely to make a good mystery go down the drain.

The mystery here, published in 1990, is one of McBain's weakest. It's not terribly clever in its set-up, and an attempt to set up a red herring is transparent. Hope seems unable to see things about his client, the jailed husband of the raped woman awaiting trial for the murders, and those closest to him which any mystery-versed reader will pick up on fast. At one point, when finally confronting the killer, he does so in a stupid, self-exposing way, without backup, despite the fact he knows someone else doing the same thing ended up losing his life.

The romances, picked up suddenly in the middle of the narrative, aren't resolved in any way. About the only thing unique is that one of the romances doesn't wind its way into the bedroom, as the couple want to take things slow for a while. The woman, it turns out, is a virgin, which makes her quite an exotic female in the McBain canon.

But this book is not for McBain virgins, or you may lose interest in reading his other, and for the most part, much better books. Then you really would be losing out on something.

Not Among McBain's Best But Mildly Entertaining Nonetheless
By Gary F. Taylor
Three Vietnamese men are found stabbed and ritualistically mutilated after death in the town of Calusa, Florida--and they share a common history. They were recently arrested and tried for the vicious rape of Jessica Leeds, whose outraged husband, Stephen, swore revenge upon them when they were found not guilty in a court of law. Stephen's wallet is found at the scene of the crime and two witnesses come forward to identify him as the man seen arriving and leaving the scene of the crime. It is, says assistant district attorney Patricia Denning, an open and shut case.

Most famous for his "87th Precinct" novels, author Ed McBain is also the creator of a series of novels commonly known as "The Fairy Tale Books," which draw their titles from loose parallels with children's stories--in this instance the three murdered, eye-gouged victims--and feature defense attorney Matthew Hope. Published in 1990, THREE BLIND MICE is the ninth in the series, and in many respects it is indicative of McBain's stylish prose and way with character.

It is not, however, indicative of McBain's best turn of plot. Although it is never implausible, neither is it--in the best traditions of both mystery and detective novels--realistically inevitable; details tend to overcrowd each other, subplot complications distract from the primary course of events, and although the conclusion is clever enough it lacks any sense of real surprise. Even so, fans of McBain will find it mildly entertaining, as will virtually any reader in seach of a quick read for a rainy afternoon. Mildly recommended.

Hope takes on a hopeless case in the sunshine state.
By Steven R. Harbin
Ed McBain's "Matthew Hope" series is one of the more entertaining and engaging mystery series set in that most murderous of states - Florida! Well, not actually perhaps, but if one reads the vast number of murderous tomes and series set in the sunshine state one might get that impression. Like John D. MacDonald, Carl Hiassen, James Hall, Lawrence Shamus, Dave Barry, Tim Dorsey, and others MacBain makes good usage of his setting. Lead character and protagonist attorney/P.I. Matthew Hope's adventures aren't as madcap and humorous as those of some of the other authors mentioned above, but he is definitely hard boiled and suspenseful.
In this novel Hope is engaged to defend Stephen Leeds, a man accused of murdering three Vietnamese immigrants who have just recently been acquited of raping Leeds' wife Jessie. When the men are found murdered and mutilated shortly after Stephen had publicly threatened to kill them, everyone assumes that he is guilty. Evidence found at the scene seems to clinch the matter, but Hope takes on the case and begins to investigate, along with his assistants. As is usual in a MacBain novel, you learn quite a lot about the various characters along the way, making them and their motives believable. I recommend all of the Matthew Hope series. While this one isn't his best, it is still a good pager turner. Recommended.
Four Stars.
