About the Author
Daniel Beaty is an award-winning actor, singer, writer, and composer. His solo plays Through the Night, Emergence-See!, and Mt. Joy, were all released to critical acclaim, garnering Beaty numerous awards including an Obie award for writing and performance and two NAACP Theater Awards. His other works include the play, Resurrection, the ensemble musical, Breath & Imagination—The Story of Roland Hayes, and the spoken word ballet, Far But Close. Beaty has worked throughout the U.S., Europe, and Africa performing on programs with artists such as Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, Jill Scott, Sonia Sanchez, MC Lyte, Mos Def, Tracy Chapman, Deepak Chopra, and Phylicia Rashad. He holds a B.A. with Honors in English & Music from Yale University and an M.F.A. in Acting from the American Conservatory Theatre. The Tallest Tree in the Forest—Beaty's newest solo play on the life of Paul Robeson—premiered in 2013, and his children's book—Knock Knock—debuted from Little Brown Books in 2013.

A MUST READ for EVERYONE...Daniel Beaty is a true INSPIRATION

Daniel Beaty is, among many things, a very accomplished stage performer. On stage he is an extraordinarily talented performer with a compelling message of hope for all humanity. Off-stage Daniel is a strikingly beautiful, gentle soul who exudes tremendous grace.
Through the words of Transforming Pain to Power, I felt the same positive energy, personal strength and love that I have experienced in Daniel's presence. Further, I had the same reaction to his book that I have had to his performances - Daniel Beaty has an important message to share and he shares it brilliantly!
In Transforming Pain to Power Daniel describes how he overcame tremendous personal hardship to create a life that is perfect for him. He not only shares how he accomplished this, but also how anyone can achieve this for himself/herself. He freely describes intimate details of his life to illustrate his points and also provides simple yet detailed exercises to follow.
I know that the market is flooded with "self-help" and "the secret of my success" type books so please make no mistake; this book does not fall into those categories. If you are going to select one book this year to change your life, I recommend this one hands down. You will be glad that you did.

A Creative & Surprisingly Joyous Read

I've long been a fan of Daniel Beaty's Poetry especially his poem "Knock Knock". As a high school English teacher, I often use his poetry in my classes because of their ability to reach some of my most resistant students while still appealing to the full class. To learn the stories behind his creative writing in this book make his poetry and plays even more inspiring to me. Both adults and young people need to be reminded that our pain doesn't have to defeat us. In fact, as Daniel says in his book, "Our deepest pain is often the path to our highest purpose." I look forward to spending time with the exercises in this book myself and certainly sharing them with my students. Daniel Beaty is an extraordinary talent who should have a larger platform especially when so much superficiality is being celebrated. I encourage you to purchase this book both to support it's empowering message and to empower yourself.

Wow. Just finished reading it! It is stellar!

Finally, a book that gives us the technology to apply real wisdom out of struggle for our daily lives. Not only is PAIN TO POWER written in a clear, astute and exquisite manner but it is also an emotionally stirring and a beautiful page turner. I was captivated by the author's candor and his life experience and how he uses it to tap into a means for positive change. The book is a must-read for anyone struggling with past hurt, for all young people no matter race or class, and essential for every educator, minister, mentor and artist. While reading this masterful work, one can literally feel old notions of success or buried frustrations began to unlock and the idea of true freedom becomes possible. His story is deeply inspiring but it also feels like he is offering the reader a hand up, a chance to breathe and start anew. I haven't read anything this powerful since I picked up Dr. King's LETTERS FROM A BIRMINGHAM JAIL. I am urging you to read this book. It was recommended to me by a friend. Now I want to recommend it to everybody. Buy two copies. One for you and one for someone you know who is struggling or just needs some support. It is a GREAT gift!
