Wouldn't read it again
By L. Tutor
To me, the mark of a good book (no matter the subject) is whether I'd sit down and enjoy reading it again. This book falls well short of that mark, for several reasons. It had potential: A young horticulture expert is hired by the patriarch of an old Italian family to restore the ancestral gardens. That's a bit of a twist, even though the rest of the storyline was built around the typical "playboy heir" and "English rose" format.
However, there were few compelling elements to the story, and any attempts to make the characters relevant to each other seemed way too contrived to be remotely believable.
First, I never connected -- at any level -- with the two main characters. From the outset, Meg seemed ditzy and shallow. While author Christina Hollis made attempts to give her some substance late, late in the story, the effort seemed like a last-ditch attempt to flesh out a character that didn't have much to work with. As for Gianni... I was really, really disappointed with the way he was introduced. I actually cringed when I realized that the name of the smarmy guy in the Prologue that Meg was swooning over matched the hero's name on the back cover. Seriously. I disliked how this book started so much, I almost put it aside right then and there.
There were occasions when I thought the story was going to become more compelling, but any attempt at depth never lasted more than a paragraph or two. I'm not sure if Ms. Hollis just lost the thread of this piece, or if it unraveled for her as fast as it did for me. Even small touches rang false: For instance, Meg was supposed to have saved the family business back in England and was in contact with her parents several times a day to check on things.... and yet she was devastated by all the changes that had been made while she was gone. You're calling multiple times a day to these parents you're so close to, and they don't clue you in to the fact that the entire atmosphere of their life has changed? Not buyin' it.
I finished the book, but it'll go to the secondhand book shop pretty fast.

Not a very good read
By Baby Ohno
I'm not even finished with this book and probably shouldn't be writing a review so I won't. It's just my opinion thus far, and I'm really tempted to fast forward to the last chapter because so far it is sooo boring I can't keep my eyes open, maybe that's why I'm on page 74. The woman in this book is so dull and I can't comprehend why she would talk to her "boss" the way she does especially since she is in fear of him firing her. It's a dull book and I do not recommend it at all. Sorry Ms. Hollis.

lame flat-liner.
By Karen Clarke
Meg's love as a gardner makes nice reading and that was about it. The rest of the character connection is shallow, boring and the mistress thing is lame. For a mega-savvy Count, Gianni is clueless/brain-dead when he is stunned that Meg isn't falling over with gratitude to be his mistress *big whoopie doo doo* Really lame and unrealistic to read of this super-rich guy being bewildered and almost wringing his poor-rich hands how 'unreasonable' Meg because she would rather get out of their relationship than limp along as his background mistress.
And yes, I nearly gagged how stunned Meg is that her parents and family business is doing so well when she is talking to them every single day. Seriously? Written like a school girl but at least it's not an alpha jerk/simpering doormat formula.
