About the Author
Christopher Seeley (B.A. Hons. & PhD, London University) has written extensively on the Japanese writing system and Chinese characters; his publications include A History of Writing in Japan (E.J. Brill, 1991, republished University of Hawai'i Press, 2000). He was senior lecturer and Head of Department at the Asian Languages Department, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand until his retirement in 2001.

Kenneth G. Henshall is well known for the many books he has written on Japanese literature, history, and culture, as well as for his popular Japanese language-learning textbooks. A graduate of the universities of London (B.A. Hons), Sydney (Ph.D.), and Adelaide (Dip. Ed.), he is now Associate Professor of Japanese at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. He has also taught at the universities of Auckland, Western Australia, California, and Waikato.

Dr. Jiageng Fan specializes in the relationship between the Chinese and Japanese languages and scripts, focusing on the etymology of characters and the change of societal/cultural values which they reflect. He has lived, studied and taught Chinese, Japanese and English in China and Australia and has travelled extensively. After obtaining a B.A. at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, he moved to Christchurch, New Zealand, where he earned his PhD at the University of Canterbury. If you are like me and you do not like Heisig's method of ...

If you are like me and you do not like Heisig's method of memorising kanji (which will help you memorise a great amount of kanjis, yes, but without knowing how to pronounce or compund them), this might just be the book for you. It aims at explaining the development of each kanji, which will help you understand these characters with a historic-semantic approach.
However, this updated version has taken a much more academic direction than Henshall's original book. There are certain pros and cons to this: solid sources are cited and a diverse range of explanations are included, but they take a tone that may not exactly be fun to read(unlike Henshall's original). It is a great source for advanced Japanese students, but is not begginer-friendly.

Quite nice update to the original book

Quite nice update to the original book. Positive changes - first section has the 1006 educational characters in its superior pedagogical order to the previous 996; characters are shown in clear large print which is much easier to discriminate than the previous brush strokes; all 2136 new kanji are included of course; JLPT levels are marked, however they had to arbitrarily decide if a character is L2 or L3, also all characters other than L2-L5 are marked L1, what else could you do although in the older rankings 26 rare kanji were properly left out of the listings, ex #1731 (CHIN) now has an L1 listing whereas previously properly left out; mixed ON-kun kanji examples are printed caps/small for components which is nice (ex #1187) unlike before.
The etymologies have undergone a lot of rewrite with sources cited. Sometimes this is really helpful. As an example #1234 KIN meaning "fungus, bacteria". I slightly prefer O'Neill's "fungus, germ" but not bad. In the etymology, it is clearly shown that the character originally meant mushroom and fungus (Shirakawa and Shuowen). Try reading the etymology and the character springs alive! (note the crowding concept in the character). Often it is more useful than the mnemonic given. In addition the examples are really good here and throughout the book. Here SAIKIN is bactera (detailed germ) and KINRUI (fungus type) means fungi - excellent. The example compounds in the book are really great with short and accurate definitions.
By the way, Kanji Alive (U. of Chicago) online also has really nice mnemonics for all N2-N5 and kyoiku kanji as well as others and are based on DeRoo. Some of those mnemonics are really super.

The Missing Link in our Culture - Logic!

Brilliant, engaging, well-written, informative. I took Logic in Jr. College w/Mr. Soccio as the instructor using this book as text, and after losing my copy I wanted to have one handy. If you want to learn more about how to think - not what to think, but how to use your brain to cut through the fluff and distractions we face every day from the media and in our lives - this book is the real deal. It should be required reading for everyone with a brain IMHO.

Not worth $247.00 of course - but you can find it other places at a more sane (logical!) price.

While the thoughts expressed helped to improve critical thinking, too much was left open for debate. A book of this nature should not be left open to such broad interpretation and the words chosen or researched so that multiple meanings are not prevelant.

A Good Introduction

This text provides a good introduction for those new to performance auditing or current auditors wanting to sharpen weaknesses in key, basic auditing areas. The book is well organized, easy to read, and relevant to the field.

As a career auditor, I believe this is one of the better texts to use as a starting point as well as a text I refer to periodically to refresh myself or my staff.

I don't think you can go wrong having this on your reference shelf.

About the Author

Feng Tang was born in 1971 in Beijing. His real name is Zhang Haipeng, and he’s a Taurus. He studied at Peking Union Medical College from 1990 to 1998 and earned a doctorate in clinical medicine with a specialization in gynecologic oncology. He received an MBA in business management in the United States and has worked as a consultant for McKinsey & Company. He currently lives in Hong Kong. His novels include the trilogy Give Me a Chick at 18, Everything Grows, and Beijing, Beijing and the standalone titles Happiness and Oneness. His short stories include “Pigs and Butterflies,” “You Live and Live and Then You’re Old,” “How to Become a Monster,” and “36 Biggies of Life.” He has written a collection of poems entitled One Hundred Poems of Feng Tang. Beijing, Beijing is his debut in English.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning ...

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning contemporary China society (especially the late 90s).

I'm personally fascinated with the story and Feng's writing style. I spent five years in China, mainly Beijing, studying Chinese and Chinese Literature. I'm glad that I encountered "Beijing,Beijing" (the Chinese version) while I was trying to delve into contemporary Chinese literature.

The "explicit erotic" depiction may remind you of Henry Miller. Beyond all that, it reveals some emotional and private experience of the generation. It has the big picture and the very personal journey as well. The late 90s is an important time period that surely can not be skipped for anyone who wants to learn the contemporary China, and "Beijing, Beijing" would be the best book to turn to.

I like to read Michelle Deeter's English translation of this book. It catches Feng's unique writing rhythm and humor.

While reading (again), I feel like it takes me back to where I were in Beijing. Highly recommend it. It will surprise you when you start it.

I guess there is a reason I didn't make to MD nor MK partner. There is something raw about BJ BJ which made them happen

Heard about Feng Tang as he is famous in China, as a controversial writer ,as a investor, as a McKinsey partner. It is hard to believe Feng Tang as 3 in 1. It is like buying a ticket expecting a movie but there is a damn hot guy sitting next to you served with popcorn and nachos for free and he asked your number ! you may like it or hate it. The 'exotic' scenes were fascinating and funny with a lot of live experiences from his Gynaecology M.D degree. (Yes he has a MD on Gynaecology). There is something heavy when I realized in this book, during the time people had so little to live on( both cultural and money wise) but so much to express. I have never been poor money wise, but I always feel poor mentally. I guess there is a reason I did not make it to MD nor MK partner. There is something raw about Beijing Beijing which made them happen. when I say raw, I meant physically and mentally . LOL

As an English reader in most time of my life, I’m happy to see his books getting published in English. Expecting to see more.

One of mine Chinese friends who is art industry recommended Feng Tang’s book to me. What I heard is that Feng’s book had become some kind of “underground” fever among Chinese readers years ago. It, of course, is not underground anymore now, but if you know a little bit about Chinese publishing industry, you may understand what I meant by “underground” that it often roughly equals excellent quality in any terms. Beijing, Beijing is one of his signature series that I enjoyed reading. Another one which is even more worth reading, Oneness, is true underground in mainland China, because it is censored and is only published in Hong Kong.

As an English reader in most time of my life, I’m happy to see his books getting published in English. Expecting to see more of him.

About the Author
Emmet Fox, who lived from 1886 to 1951, was born in Ireland. His father was a member of parliament, and Mr. Fox studied electrical engineering in England. In his early adulthood, Emmet Fox became interested in spirituality. Around 1930, he moved to the United States, and soon thereafter began lecturing on spiritual themes in New York City. 2 Lieberman acknowledges the difficulties of direct introspection and concentrates on assisting the reader by "cutting away the clutter" and illuminating behaviors that have become an automatic response mechanism.
3 Lieberman has a plain and engaging writing style. The nutshell summaries are well-written and provide a good overview of the topics. The suggestions for change are simple, powerful, and (notionally) easy to implement.
The analysis of each self-defeating behavior is in three parts:
1 A concise description of particular behaviors, attitudes, and feelings that are consistent with the troublesome automatic responses.
2 A discussion of the response that includes plausible reasons for its creation and existence.
3 Simple techniques to force awareness of a response, and suggestions for changing the behavior.
Why Do I Enjoy Being Angry?
Issue: Enjoyment of anger and a reluctance to calm down and lose the sensation of power and vitality.
Discussion: Anger is usually a mask for fear and vulnerability. Anger can be a strong emotion that you feel in an otherwise numb existence. You may feel that no one pays attention to you unless you compel it. You may also enjoy getting angry because it makes you feel powerful.
Getting angry can alienate others and is rarely a good way to communicate effectively with them or enlist their support. It is an effective way to increase the risk for heart disease and to undermine your immune system.
Suggestions for change: Avoid inappropriate/disproportionate anger by identifying and acknowledging your feelings as they arise: what is causing the fear that underlies the anger?
Example: If you react with anger to trying situations, examine what you can do to prevent such occurrences. E.g., if your car tyres need air, top them up when you notice it, and avoid creating an avoidable drama when they blow in the middle of a journey to an important appointment.
If you rely on anger to make you feel powerful, then explore more benign ways to get the same feeling; e.g, take an advanced driver's course. If you crave high-stakes, high-drama excitement, then a challenging sport may be a good option, such as adventure excursions, white-water rafting or mountaineering.
Lieberman recommends a five phase process for loosening the hold of self-defeating behaviors and accepting control of your life; four of the stages are succinctly described in ten pages.
Some clients dislike Instant Analysis because they assume that it offers a quick fix or is too simple to meet the needs of people who have complex lives or whose behaviors cause them (and others) significant distress. One client told me that the techniques in the book were too simple just after he had told me two stories:
1 "Obesity is a ridiculous case of self-harming. Everyone knows that they need to eat fewer calories and do more exercise. It's that simple but no one wants to face it. They'd rather spend their time examining their relationships and blaming others. Or they're just too lazy to do what they know needs to be done."
2 "We've just had to pay out [the equivalent of 8.5 thousand dollars] to repair the water damage caused to the house by the recent leaks in the wet weather. It turned out that the gutters were blocked. It wasn't anything major at all and it caused all that damage."
Solutions to many issues are essentially simple and Lieberman describes them very well. The challenge to every reader is to know whether one is ready to implement them and be willing to change.

A must-read for all human beings...

Bringing psychology into plain English, Dr. David Lieberman offers a wealth of information that is useful for every reader. No one is immune from the emotional fragilities that accompany life. While some people are more stable than others, each individual has experienced certain fears and self-doubts. Leiberman artfully addresses many of these circumstances by identifying the problem, analyzing the situation and offering several solutions. The main text, which is divided into 100 easy to read and understand chapters, teaches the reader to overcome his or her self-defeating habits. Lieberman states, "By becoming aware of your behavior, thoughts and feelings, you make visible the process and gain the ability to see the harm." Thus, when one is able to indentify and admit self-defeating habits, one has taken the first step to conquering the problem, and is on the road to wellness. Lieberman states that the objective here is to break up the negative mental routine and break free from conditioned thought patterns. As he writes, "This is accomplished by looking objectively at specific behaviors that usually go unnoticed or unexamined. As you begin to question these behaviors, you will get in the 'habit' of not being in the habit." How does one identify these unnoticed behaviors? Dr. Lieberman does the work for the reader. By looking through the 100 chapters, the reader will be able to indentify with certain circumstances that he or she may not have noticed, because the self-defeating behavior has become habit. For example, several chapters include: "Why do I always stare at myself in the mirror?" "Why am I so absent-minded?" "Why am I so easily discouraged?" "Why do I misplace my keys, papers, and just about everything else?" (my favorite), "Why do I enjoy being angry"?, and "Why do I act cruelly to people I care about?" By scanning the table of contents, the reader ! ! will be able to identify several self-defeating habits that! the reader engages in -- realized or unrealized. By reading the entire text, the reader will understand basic human pyschology as a whole: the reader will understand his or her problems as well as the weaknesses of others. *Instant Analysis* is the modern "Cliff Notes" of human psychology. After identifying the problem, Dr. Lieberman describes several scenarios applicable to the the situation and offers several helpful solutions. For example, in the chapter concerning losing keys, etc. Lieberman offered several suggestions that has helped me overcome this most frustrating situation. *Instant Analysis* is a must-read for all human beings. As humans, no one is immune from self-defeating habits. By indentifying the problem and offering concise and powerful solutions, Dr. Leiberman can save each reader hundreds of dollars in psychiatric fees and hours of therapy. *Instant Analysis* is the bible of modern psychology, written for "everyday people."

A Must Read, I LOVED it !

I read the first book of this series, Empower Me, #1, In the Spotlight and I loved it and this one was even better. This is a story of the reincarnation of Goddess Freya in our modern civilization, sharing her sexual desire between two billionaires from New York .Strangely enough one seem as neurotic as Donald Trump. I loved it from start to finish and once again I was pulled into the very soul of Freya, her character is extremely deep and so passionate. She loves hard and she loves Corey and her desire for him is immense. He loves her, but takes the time to actually show her what she means to him. It is sensual, steamy, sexy and a dreamy romance. It is very well written, exceptional details done with class. The author take us from Manhattan to the kingdom of Bhutan, the illustration are incredible. I love the style of Jean-Claude Carvill and the way he keeps you suspended in anticipation of what is to come. I recommend this book with my highest regards, it is delightful and you will not be disappointed..

Another Great Storytelling and Narration

Although this audio book is actually the sequel to Empower Me #1, Jean-Claude Carvill still did a superb in his storytelling for Empower #2, which was very vivid and sensual. The love triangle between Freya, Corey and Tristan kept me attention throughout the audio book, however, I couldn’t listen it all in one day (I wish I could). I love the way the author use of the elements from the Norse goddess Freya for the main character. Plus, Lily Horne delivers yet another narration for this book. Once again, her voice brought out the sensuality and vibrancy of Empower #2. Overall, this was yet another great storytelling from Jean-Claude Carvill.

Very Sensual and The Perfect Buildup

Really enjoyed this audiobook. This is book 2 in the series. The main character has been won away in a motorcycle race from her cheater abusive bf. The hunky new Mr Right is patient and likes to let the romance "build up." It's very sensual and tasteful. The story moves at the perfect pace. It's a great length! I hate stories rush through and are super short. I had time to fall in love with the characters and the buildup was pretty amazing! New hunky tease of a boyfriend, threat of a dangerous ex, and throw in an "o" expert. Loved it!
