She is the author of more than 100 scholarly publications, many of them on the topic of deception, and is one of the foremost academic experts in the field. DePaulo's work on deception has been described in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and many other major national and international newspapers. It has also been reported in magazines such as Time, the New York Times Magazine, the New Yorker, Readers' Digest, and U.S. News and World Report. Excellent and easy to read

Dr. DePaulo makes some excellent points in her easy-to-read book.
The most insightful section for me was the one that discussed how lies told by a truly significant other is so damaging, and sometimes spells the end to the relationship.
We hear so much about how affairs and secret lives - once discovered - set into motion the blossoming of a much better relationship for the couple. I have never understood the comment by the offended party that now that the lies and deceit have been revealed, the relationship is better than ever. That might be the ideal for which couples should strive, but I think Dr. DePaulo makes an excellent point that it rarely happens that way.
I did have a couple of problems with her section on lies that are told because people are forced to lie; that others put them in a position not to tell the truth because of fear of retribution.
Everyone of us is responsible for our own behavior. To say that the liar has told an untruth because he/she is afraid to tell the truth sounds an awful lot like blaming the victim.
She also uses the term "dupes" for the recipient of a lie. It seems there could have been a better descriptor, as the word "dupe" tends to make the person sound less than bright.
All in all, this is a wonderful and highly recommended book.

Seshat Sat’Heru has been studying yoga for many years across three continents. Besides being a cerified yoga teacher, she is a Hmt Ntr (High Priestess) of the goddess Wadjet, and Wab (Purification) Priestess of the Temple of Anu. This book is so very well written i must say Dua (thanks) for sharing your experience and taking on your journey thus book has enlightened me more and gave very good detail understanding of yoga and and deeper spiritual insight of self discovery. I impress and motivated to return back into doing kemetic yoga..i do look forward to purchasing some of the other books as well as patiently waiting for volume 2

This wonderful work presented itself to me in what I call an on point and timely manner. Having practiced, however minute, kundalini yoga in the past, I had endeavored to begin again and this book was brought to my attention. Not only is it filled with awesome insight from the author's own personal experiences with the practice, it also presents valuable knowledge as to the true ancient origin of this spiritual path. This is great wisdom and great news for those of us who are descendants of Africans. I encourage anyone reading this review to take the leap and purchase this work and any future works from this profoundly intuitive author.

What if I never found this book ?

I am so glad that I make a habit of paying attention to references from other authors. As I'm reading The Road Less Traveled, I noticed in M. Scott Peck's book, that he quoted Wheelis's book. I don't know if I would have ever heard of this of little gem of a book, so full of powerful words, if I hadn't noticed the title looking at me at the bottom of page 43 in TRLT. As someone who was treated as target practice physically as a child by my mother, but damaged even more so psychologically, it was so soothing to be able to relate to Wheelis's account of his father's treatment of him and how the author's acceptance of his father's opinion as fact, maintained a stronghold on the choices he made through adult life. He so articulately, using some great analogies to really drive in the concepts, demonstrated that it's only your *acceptance* of the verdict brought upon by adults in your childhood life that make your life tough now. Once you can trace your current behaviour to experiences as a youth, you see the freedom you really have in your reactions to life in the present. I'll stop now, because It's obvious I'm not a writer - just very passionate about letting people know how effective this book can really be. Look at it like this guy Wheelis met you in person, took you to lunch, and he let you in on what he found out as a psychoanalyst, about how the guilt brought upon him in childhood, and the value judgements that he accepted as true, truly messed with the actual physiological reactions (steel fingers around the heart when he's put on the spot socially) to social situations he still experiences in his 60's. But this book is way better than that lunch with him in person. There's a lot more material than just an hour of conversation, and it's always there, and you can understand so much by re-reading and re-reading, and that's what I've done, with more understanding each time I re-read it.

Change is a daunting task

This compulsively readable book explores the nature of suffering, freedom, insight,will, action, and change. What elsewhere is elaborated upon in volumes is here explored in less than 120 pages. How you ask? He writes incisivley and "cuts to the quick!"
Among the many "things" Wheelis takes on is the question of who and what we are. He, like the behaviorists or existentialists, concludes we are what we do. If actions define a man those which are repetitious become self sustaining and with time's passage, highly resistant to change. Acts or events which in the past shape us, become not just something we know but rather "a rule of mental operation" or what we are. So how do people change? Change may occur within the context of varying circumstances. People may change from within spontaneously and unthinkingly as the result of physiological changes as is the case in adolesence or old age. Likewise, they may change by force of external circumstances as in the case of survivors of POW camps. Finally people may change from within, consciously, deliberately and by design. But deliberative change is a tale of immense difficulty. Why, because no one can do the deed but oneself. At its very best therapy may be "catalytic"and insight illuminating but neither can get the"job" done. According to Wheelis both may mean little or nothing at all. If the "job" of change is to be accomplished it can only be brought about through intention, will, determination and action.
To change oneself is a daunting task for which there are no guarantees. In a metaphoric sense, when we attempt to change we become not only the sculptor but the marble to be worked upon as well

Will You Change?

Wheelis might argue that my writing this review is a conundrum: mandatory necessity versus arbitrary necessity. I cannot or will not answer that question. Suffice it to say that you the reader ought to make the time to read this slim book.
His writing is embarrassingly succinct and refreshingly frank. Thus, the book invites several readings; I have read it several times. Keep in mind that the subject of this book is self-directed change. "So long as one lives, change is possible; but the longer such behavior is continued the more force and authority it acquires." How then do we change? "Insight is instrumental to change, often an essential part of the process, but does not directly achieve it."
The author, to his credit, includes himself as a portrait of one who struggles with change. Read the chapter entitled "Grass." A friend, reading it, refused to borrow the book. She condemned the story as an example of child abuse. Superficially, it certainly seems so. One cannot avoid, however, the poignancy of the father's heartfelt remarks, "I wish you could understand, though, that I wouldn't be trying to teach you so fast if I knew I would live long enough to teach you more slowly." The father lay sick with tuberculosis, dying but months later.
Wheelis puts the story in context that will resonate with all who read it: "Thus I was made a psychological slave." But, "A slave is one who accepts the identity ascribed to him by a master." So, can one change? How? I cannot answer that question. I can give you one last quote from Wheelis, "The new mode will be experienced as difficult, unpleasant, forced, unnatural, anxiety-provoking. It may be undertaken lightly but can be sustained only by considerable effort of will. Change will occur only if such action is maintained over a long period of time."
Or, was B.F. Skinner more correct? "A person does not act upon the world, the world acts upon him."

Great ideas, but some poor recipes

This cookbook contains over 100 recipes along with 30 party plans including menus and planning tips. I'll be honest; I don't own a triple slow cooker, just a normal one crock slow cooker. I was still interested to see what kind of recipes it contained. It is an interesting mix. There are party plans/menus for everything from Overnight Guests to Baby Showers, Mother's Day, Italian Dinner, Christmas Evening and many more. Many of the recipes sound scrumptious, and I can't wait to start cooking! Vidalia Onion Dip (only 4 ingredients and still sounds heavenly!), Cuban Pork with Cilantro Mayonnaise, Chicken con Queso and many, many more.

Some of the other recipes--well, not so much. I made the Overnight Fruited Oatmeal last night, and it was really bland. It definitely needed something else added to it. The recipe for Queso Dip calls for pepper jack and white american or other processed white cheese, which seems odd considering that actual queso cheese is so widely available nowadays, and is very affordable. Family Mac 'N Cheese actually calls for cheez whiz. Seriously?!? My kids won't even eat that stuff. The Chicken and Mushroom Alfredo Sauce calls for 2 jars of store bought alfredo which seems a shame when it is so quick and easy to whip up a true alfredo. It would have been nice to maybe add the recipe for real alfredo sauce underneath to allow people the choice. Many dishes call for barbecue sauce, but there isn't a single recipe for barbecue sauce in the book--you're just expected to use store-bought. Yes, I realize this is a book to help you throw a party with less work, but it would be nice to have the option of spending 2-5 minutes more and making a better dish if you wanted to. Those issues dropped the rating for this cookbook somewhat.

A great, great story! I wish there were a sequel!

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I would love to get ahold of more by this author. I am an avid reader, erotica, paranormal, mystery, drama, sci-fy, you name it, I read it. So when I say I like the authors style it isn't an uneducated opinion. There are certain elements I look for in any book that make it an exceptional read, I won't give them all
Away, because after all they are mine. But let's say I enjoy not knowing at the beginning who the bad guy is, I like to be surprised, I enjoy an exceptional first time
Love scene and I like it rough (on occasion). I mean,of course, in a book. This book gives me all of that plus a thousand! Rarely do I keep a book in my icloud storage on my kindle, but for this book, I did. I will read it again someday, and that to me, is the best compliment I can think to give an author. I have read it, and I will read it again.
If you like paranormal romance, with some erotic elements, a little roughage, some mystery, drama, heart string tugging, loyalty and strong family ties, then you will adore this book. I highly recommend it!

Getting there

Almost the very first scene included forced sex. Unlike a previous offering from this author, there was at least dubious consent, grudgingly given considering the submissive partner was a servant. I liked the characters and for the most part the sex scenes were rather erotic. I thought the writing had growing moments of promise but found other parts of it juvenile.

Unbelievable, unreal, yet true!

Can you imagine being a student, no more than the age of eighteen, and involved in communications with a serial killer that's past victims fit your description? Amazingly, Jason Moss pulled it off. Putting his own life on the line, he successfully entered the lives and minds of several different serial killers including John Wayne Gacy whom he got the closest to. Other than being down right crazy and unbelievable, it offers a view that the public is often not shown of serial killers. Included are pictures of himself with Gacy and others as well as pictures from the original crimes.

This book is a true life, thrill ride from beginning to end. Once you pick it up you absolutely cannot put it down. Although the book is a great read, I do not recommend it for the faint of heart due to its violent and explicit content. It gets very graphic at times. Any true crime fan should definitely read this book. It's well worth the time.

Jason, at the age of 18, wrote letters to various serial killers in jails around the United States, construing his personality in such a way as to lay a mental trap for those in prison, in hopes of a response. He received many letters in return, as each predator innmate, including John Wayne Gacy and Jeffery Dahlmer, sought him as a troubled youth in need of their advice.

You won't be able to put this down. I read the whole thing in one night. Copies of the letters received from the innmates are in the book, including phone conversations that occured with John Wayne Gacy. Jason Moss ended up visiting Gacy in prison... and the end of the book records an incredibly frightening experience...

Having just visited this beautiful park, and being lucky enough to see tigers on both of my safari,s I was interested to learn more about the man who made this park possible. He faced many adversaries which are well documented by the author. The world is a better place for his efforts. A well written book, kudos to the author who met him as a child and shared with us his essence.
