RATING FOR THE KINDLE VERSION - DO NOT BUY FOR KINDLE!

This book is really good, but I should have listened to the previous comment about the KINDLE VERSION being difficult to read. The footnotes are not accessible and where pictures should be it just says "can't put photo" or something. I bought this one week ago exactly and it will not let me return it. I wish I could return it and get the hard copy, it is really a good book but I do not enjoy reading it on the kindle because I feel like I am missing a lot and that is no fun.

What are you waiting for?

Great book. I can't believe I took so long to get around to buying it. It's not necessarily the type of book I'd read over and over, but I will definitely be lending it to friends to read. Just a very well written book and obviously a unique story. If you like Criminal Minds, Law and Order and those kind of shows you will love this book. Written from the prosecutor's perspective, there are details and explanations that are just...well, real.

Recommended.

I purchased the hard copy as recommend by another reader. Apparently the kindle version doesn't have the pictures that are in the hard copy. If that's the case (I can't be sure because I didn't order the kindle copy), I would HIGHLY recommend you purchase and read this one!

A Classic of True Crime

Amazingly enough (especially considering my interest in the macabre), I had never before picked up this classic true crime account of the Manson Murders. I’m pleased to say that I have rectified that deficiency, and that I was not disappointed in the least.

Bugliosi (who was also the lead prosecutor of Manson and his co-defendants) begins the 600+ page book with the Tate murders themselves. We follow the housekeeper as she enters the property to begin her day, the trauma of the bodies being discovered, and the movements of the police who first entered the scene. We are next led along to the LaBianca murder scene (the murder of an elderly couple also committed by Manson’s “Family”). From these two bloodbaths, Bugliosi takes the reader along through the (occasionally horribly bungled) police investigation, letting us walk along with investigators as they try to make sense of such seemingly senseless killings.

As I said earlier, Bugliosi was the lead prosecutor of the case (and occasional investigator). This is certainly in evidence as Bugliosi approaches “Helter Skelter” like a trial in and of itself. Physical evidence, witness statements, and paper trails are carefully presented and thoroughly dissected for the reader. The sheer weight of evidence eventually brought together against Manson and his family is presented here in largely chronological order, and shows just how completely Bugliosi throws himself into his work. There is a good reason why Helter Skelter is considered one of the best true crime books written (easily up there with Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood).

So, grab this book and read it. For such a hefty tome, it goes by very quickly. Bugliosi’s style is intense, but highly readable. Any one who is interested in true crime will obviously love this book, but even if that isn’t your usual genre, this is a compelling read about a charismatic madman and the incredible influence he had, not only on his followers, but on the country as a whole.

Good resource.

This is a good resource if you want to get into Event Planning, or have found yourself in an Event Planning job, and want to learn about the core process, and get some tips for managing the process and increasing your professionalism. There aren't many event coordinating books out there that aren't totally outdated, but this is a good one. If you're looking at it, you should probably get it.

About the Author
Seth Schwartz is the Lucius N. Littauer Professor of Classical Jewish Civilization and Professor of History and of Classics at Columbia University. He is the author of Imperialism and Jewish Society, 200 BCE to 640 CE (2001), which received the National Jewish Book Award and was a finalist for the Koret Book Award, and Were the Jews a Mediterranean Society? Reciprocity and Solidarity in Ancient Judaism (2010).

Jews in Antiquity: What We Know about and How We Know It

There are three groups of readers who will find Seth Schwartz's new book -- "The Ancient Jews from Alexander to Mohammed" -- a must read: 1) anyone interested in Jewish history, 2) general fans of books on Ancient History, Classicism and early Christianity, and 3) the general reader of histories who care about questions of historiography, particularly in the study of Antiquity.

For those interested in Jewish History what is compelling about Professor Schwartz's latest volume is that, unlike some of the widely publicized books for a popular audience, here is the story narrated by a leading scholar in the field who is among historians who have taken a fresh naturalistic, and perhaps moderately revisionist, view of the story of Jews in the ancient world. One might be surprised to learn that there is anything new to say about a tale that has been researched and retold over and over again for the last 150 years, but this is a highly readable book that sees events and dramatis personae without looking through the distorting lens of religiosity or ideology. As the Lucius N. Littauer Professor of Classical Jewish Civilization at Columbia University and throughout his career, Professor Schwartz has contributed dozens of highly cited scholarly articles and books on Jewish antiquity, but here he has produced a book that is immediately accessible by the interested non-scholar as well as those casually curious about the topic. For the students of Jewish history, this book has to be considered an assigned text.

For the wider audience of Ancient History, Classical Greece and Rome, and early Christianity, Professor Schwartz provides an eye-opening exposition of the importance of ancient Palestine in the world of Alexander's successors, Roman politics, Christianization of the empire, development of Jewish-Christian boundaries, and post-Constantine Roman law. Who knew (among us non-scholars, that is) that the Colosseum in Rome is a monument to the victory over the Jewish rebels by the Flavian emperors Vespasian and Titus -- "mission accomplished" or as they stated it: «ex manubiis belli», "from the spoils of the war"?

For all readers, this book poses the question of what can we know about the ancient world. There is discussion throughout the chapters, footnotes, and in a critical bibliographic essay on the literature in the field. But more importantly, the book grapples with the question of what is knowable about societies that are so remote in time and condition from our own and which left us extremely limited archival material. Professor Schwartz asserts a methodology that might be called tentative positivism that integrates the entire record of available text, papyri, epigraphy, coinage, and archeology, which are then infused with modern social theory to create the most likely, evidence-based minimal hypotheses. For Schwartz, a text may be sacred, but the test of historicity is context.

I have been a student of Professor Schwartz -- an experience that allows me to report that the narration of "The Ancient Jews from Alexander to Mohammed" is written in his own voice with his humor, his occasional sarcasm and characteristic bluntness, his suspicion of authority including his own, and his ever present keenness of insight.

Important professional overview for professional historians not for lay readers

Seth Schwartz is an extremely well-respected researcher of the rabbinic period in Jewish history. He is considered a "minimalist" in not overinterpreting textual and archeological data. His writing style in this volume is extremely dense and dry to put it mildly. Others might claim he doesn't know how to communicate well in the English language. Don't expect to be entertained. But this is a serious attempt at putting together a survey and overview of the period. His main audience is other researchers and professionals in his field, not to an informed, lay readership looking for a good introduction to the period and the field. For a lay readership, Schiffman's "From Text to Tradition" is a maximalist survey of the same period.

I enjoy books that focus on human evolution

I enjoy books that focus on human evolution, and "Sapiens" is the perfect thing for that. This summary, in my opinion, is perfect. It highlights all the key details of the full book, and helped to refresh my mind on some of the things I had forgotten. You get an in-depth look at the people mentioned throughout the book as well. It's a fast read full of useful information without all the fluff in the original. Would highly recommend.

Very interesting indeed!

A nice book to read if you want to have a crash course in human history. Honestly, most of the people right now already have no idea about human history…it’s like they’ve already forgotten what they’ve learn from school! Dr. Yuval Harari did a great job in keeping things casual and not like those classroom type discussion that are boring. The book is noticeably well-researched and substantive…this can even substitute for a regular academic book! Kodus to the author for a great and interesting book!

Good summary

The book Sapiens was one of my readings in school but I never fully got to comprehend its meaning and pretty much winged it. After seeing this book, I thought I'd get it and re-read the summary to see if my understanding of the book was even close to the real meaning. The book is pretty well-written and kept things short. Didn't go overboard with trying to explain each chapter. Dr. Harari is amazing and this book somehow gave me a preview of what he was thinking.

love love love this

Its been a couple of weeks since my last fix..... I was pleased to get straight on it!

Loved this installment, felt like I was catching up with old friends.

Clementine and Ward, London seems to go well, even meeting Ward's family.

Uh Oh poor Slade and Trinity, they do seem to be in a tough place, I hope they can either move on or work things out. Heartbreaking.

Skye and Carson, although piggy in the middle are really pulling out all the stops in helping their friends with their grief. Its not fair that they are only managing to snatch a few moments together.

Conrad and Beatrice, still not going well! she is upset, I get that but she really is a selfish, self-centered cow, She feels Conrad betrayed her, but she is having a really hard time coming to terms with his decision to see her father. We all knew it would come and bite him in the ass but I didn't think to this extent.

I loved how Mike is being really sympathetic with both his children, whey they both need him.

Seems Silke and Pike are doing OK, well until he shares his feelings, I can't help but think their time is limited, don't think Pike helped ease er mind and heart.

Thomas and Rome, come over as a great couple, and its quite one sided, I wonder how long Rome can g on pretending, not only to herself but to Thomas too. Great to see Theo's not giving up on having a friendship with his brother.

Arsen really has done a great job, turning his life around, and is doing a grand job. His meeting with Lydia was very one sided and very cold, and Abby's words blew me away.

Clementine and Ward, I’ll admit at first I was wary about these two but I’m warming up to them, they are not as bad as I initially thought they would be. Ward is slowly growing on me but I still reserve judgment because I feel like he’s too good to be true. I hope Clementine doesn’t get hurt throughout all this. Ooh meeting the family, that will either end in disaster or it’ll be good, I won’t tell you which one but let’s say it was memorable.

Slade; for a clever guy, you can be really dense sometimes. It is hard to see why after falling and being truly in love with Trinity, why he wouldn’t want to progress their relationship naturally and commit to a life with her. I can see both sides of the argument, I truly hope that these two can find a way to be happy with each other. That is my hope, not sure if it’ll happen though.

Arsen, he’s making strides into being a better person and I love how much he’s trying, he’s not giving and I’m slowly thinking he will get his happy ending somewhere down the line. He has to or it will all be for nothing; I don’t want that to happen. There has to be a positive end goal aka getting Silke back into his life.

Cayson and Skye feel like they can’t help Slade or Trinity because they’re on the opposite side in terms of knowing what they want, and making sure they stay together and happy. I’m so glad I fell in love with this series, I can’t help but get emotionally invested with these characters, there is something special about it. You will get so addicted to these characters, I swear you will.

Whip out the tissues....

Trinity and Slade call in quits. Trinity doesnt know what she wants. Well..she knows she eants to get married to Slade, but he doesnt. Then she tells him to change his mind after she pressures him to. Once he does change his mind, thats not good enough for her because its forced..because she forced him!!! Ughhh they annoy me

Silke is not really over Arsen!! Yay! He is finally making it on him own, mey his daughter. Bow the only thing left isnto get Silke back. That will be interesting.

Clementine is falling for Ward..and falling hard. They are cute together but you know s***s about the hit fan like usual.

Thomas and Rome are getting hot and heavy, but something is up and still bo answers!!!

This series is a big addiction and i love it
