Vis-à-vis engages students with its unique integration of contemporary culture and communicative building blocks, providing the tools they need to build a solid foundation in introductory French. The proven qualities of Vis-à-vis are well known:
an easy-to-navigate chapter structure with four lessons in which vocabulary, grammar, and culture work together as integrated units;
an abundance of practice activities that range from form-focused to communicative;
a balanced approach to the four skills;
diverse coverage of the Francophone world that includes an outstanding video program featuring bloggers and cultural footage from eight different Francophone regions.
These features support the core goals of the introductory French course―communicative and cultural competence―and lay the groundwork for student success.
“Connect French” and “LearnSmart”
In its sixth edition, Vis-à-vis, continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of instructors and students by responding to feedback from these users themselves. Mediocre and frustrating
By mel
This workbook, along with the textbook, are the required texts for an introductory French course that I am taking. This review is for both the textbook and the workbook as a package.
Let's get the most underwhelming part out of the way: THERE IS NO ACCESS CODE INCLUDED.
The Good:
- This book is simple. If you have high-school level English, you will understand what is going on in this book.
- There are recordings on the website to go along with the exercises. The recordings are quite high-quality and give good listening/pronunciation practice. The videos do a good job reinforcing vocabulary, albeit with at times questionable content.
- Some answers are at the back of the book.
The Bad: This book is simple and not very useful.
- The content is dumbed-down. The activities and lessons ask (assume) students to be shallow; it is extremely frustrating. I have no interest in looking up the personal lives of celebrities in order to describe them using adjectives for a workbook exercise. It's impolite, and there are many far more effective ways to use my time. (Side rant: What is up with the obsession with films and films and films, and why the widespread hatred of mathematics portrayed in this book?)
- The culture presented is watered-down and oversimplified. The text and workbook encourage students to overgeneralize about culture, to a fault.
The Ugly: The pedagogy is lacking.
- Who decided that it would be a good idea to spread out pronunciation tips throughout the book? Wouldn't it be better to put all the pronunciation tips at the beginning of the book, so that a beginner student could familiarize himself/herself with the sounds immediately and practice proper pronunciation throughout his/her studies?
- The layout is extremely poorly thought-out (there is no system); it is nigh impossible to find what you are looking for in this book, unless you have photographic memory!

Incomplete
By Cheryl A. Emerson
Vis a Vis comes with a access code to work online. Unfortunately if you don't open the full page, you too will miss the disclaimer that it might not be included in the rental price. After contacting the publisher, I was able to purchase the code for $90, almost twice the cost of the rental! This code was not available at the college bookstore where I am taking the class, nor could I have gotten it directly from the publisher if I was not a teacher at a school that has an account! Where does this leave everyone else, where are they shopping? The cost of textbooks is astronomical, the list price for this book is just crazy @ $290+

No online code comes with the textbook
By Kathryn Ortman
Heads up: no online code comes with the text book or work book. I'm sure the book itself is fine, but be advised that you do NOT get the online code when you buy the book or the work book. If you contact the publisher, McGraw-Hill, you may be able to get access to the online site, but you will get charged for the online code and it may not work correctly for your professor/teacher. Another review stated that you would get a code with the book, so we bought it under that assumption, but once it arrived, we discovered we needed to make an additional purchase.
