    not an exciting or particulary helpful read , I pad apps that are 20$ are awesome

    I feel this is the worst anatomy book I have ever looked at, so I quit looking at it and found better references. It contains the body we are used to, however, it is black and white photos with an organization pattern that confuses to say the least. It does have more detailed labeling and terminology than I was used to in undergrad. I think the pocket atlas is a dying trend, when there are such good pocket appliances. I recommend an I pad app like the one in this link, but I prefer essential anatomy by 3D4Medical Visible Body 3D Human Anatomy Atlas 2 for Mac [Download]

    This handy atlas has every anatomical part listed in English, and fortunately also includes the full Latin index as well. The illustrations are very detailed. It is easy to find each part, with a good description. Once one has a basic understanding of anatomy, one can use this handbook for study and review, rather than carrying around large and heavy textbooks.

    a poor text. Very confusing diagrams with an odd numbered key. You spend so much time looking for the key, thay you can't even get back to the anatomical structure that you were reviewing. Compared to a "Netters" text, this is junk. It is a shame that Dr. Netters is deceased! We need his diagrams and plates in pocket format!!

    About the Author
    Gary B. Shelly wrote and published his first computer education textbook in 1969. More than twenty million copies of Shelly Cashman Series' textbooks have been sold. Gary and a talented group of contributing authors have produced books on computer programming, computer concepts, and application software that are the leading textbooks in the computer technology market today. Gary has hosted the annual Shelly Cashman Institute, a week-long training event focusing on the latest topics in technology, for the past 34 years.

    Thomas J. Cashman received his education at California State University, Los Angeles. He established one of the first business data processing programs in the U.S. at Long Beach City College in California, where he taught and served as department head. In 1969, he began collaborating with now best-selling author, Gary Shelly.

    Harry J. Rosenblatt is a professor of information systems at College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, where he has taught for over 16 years. His background is in management and computer systems consulting. He has co-authored the last six editions of Systems Analysis and Design for the Shelly Cashman Series(R).

    Good overview of SAD but not good for serious SAD study

    For beginners to Systems Analysis & Design I would recommend this textbook, however do not rely on this for a serious study of Systems Analysis & Design. This book is easy to read, but the "This technique is so great, note - there are some disadvantages" can get annoying at times. Maybe this book could be used as an overview of SAD for managers. Also, the Student Study Guide provided on CD-ROM with the text is not useful for quick review of the text for an exam as each chapter takes up 80 slides and each review of each chapter takes a while to read.

    Comprehensive Introduction

    Ok, firstly this book has excellent presentation and pedagogy. Somebody took some serious care to ensure this book is visually pleasing and well organized. It contains a CD-rom with summaries of each chapter as well as well as weblinks, glossaries of each chapter and chapter outlines. There are no design tools CASE tools however.
    Content: This book is a very good introduction to systems analysis and design: the operative word being INTRODUCTION. It paints a very broad picture in reasonable detail. There are enough examples and explanation to be able to extrapolate how to do very basic structured systems analysis. Object oriented analysis on the other hand while covered, is done so in a fairly rudimentary manner (in a toolkit- ie. appendix- rather than in the body of the book). This book is less about the mechanics of how and more about the why and why not and what you're likely to need before you do do some systems analysis. Personally I think the book by WHitten (isbn 0072552360) provides more bang for your buck in that it covers functional decomposition, functional primitives, decision tables, databases, ERDs, prototyping, OO analysis and design in greater depth and with more reality and for significantly less money. WHitten is far less accessible though, the price of being far more technical than this one- and it is fairly old now. This book is very accessible, but that comes at the cost of content. If you want deeper how-to, try Whitten...if you want a easier overview then try this. However the price is quite significant for this book.
    Pedagogy wise, this book is very good. Lots of pratical examples and expositions of real life situations, review questions (no answers) directions to a web site to chase down further understanding and knowledge. A case study permeates the book which makes it very accessible because the case study I found was interesting and quite 'likely'. The toolkits (ie. appendices) are quite interesting, if somewhat 'lite'. To me, they seemed more of a checklist and point of reference than a substantive learning source.
    So, in all, a nice, neat book, if rather expensive though. Look at it if you're looking for a broad overview and/or a jumping off point for systems analysis and design. ELsewhere may provide you with work of a more concrete, down to brass-tacks (leveling) nature. It can also serve as a reasonable adjunct to a more technical text, to clarify concepts and provide a philosophical overview of systems analysis and design as well as clarifying some concepts in a clear, concise way. It probably won't teach you 'deep thought' systems analysis and design however.

    My Students Love It!

    I teach systems analysis courses, and this book is an excellent text for us. It is easy to read, well-researched, and describes current real-world thinking in this field. It has many good case studies, along with an on-line virtual company case study that is unique. I highly recommend this book.

I’m not an ugly duckling that the cool cats use to make themselves look like even bigger jerks, and I’m definitely not a wallflower, though that whole virginal thing, well that’s really none of your business. I’m just the girl more interested in taking pictures and playing on her acoustic than getting caught up in the petty drama that four years of high school is guaranteed to create. Until Christian. I know, I know. It’s always a guy isn’t it? Girl on the fast track to any college she chooses, always seems to get tripped up by the guy. But hear me out! This guy…he’s different. You see, Christian Cayne isn’t just some guy I almost ran down on my first day here and later fell in love with. I wish it were that simple. It would make what’s gotta happen now easier. Christian is a lot of things to a lot of people since he landed here with his dad at the end of the summer, but in a couple of months, he’s going to have to be one thing only to me. My step-brother.

    Loved!!!

    Loved this.

    When I first read the blurb I was sold. When I read the Prologue I was already in love with this story.

    From the start you know that Emery and Christian are going to meet, fall in love, and then have their lives turned upside down when they realize they are soon to become step siblings. I mean, we learn that from the Prologue, but knowing that's what's going to happen and actually experiencing it as it all unfolds is quite another. Written beautiful here is a story of two souls meant to be together. We watch it happen slowly, not rushed, and while this is happening I almost forgot that trouble was on the horizon because it all seemed so perfect - so meant to be. So, when the time came for it all to come crashing down I was pissed. I was pissed and heartbroken and just so...sad.

    But you know what? I was also happy to see that while Emery was trying to make her mom happy, at the risk of breaking her own heart, Christian wasn't going down without a fight. He stood tall, demanded that the people in their life listen to him. He proved his love over and over again.

    It was incredible to witness a young man fight for what's right - fight for what's his. It was also incredible to witness how his father was on his side through it all. The father-son dynamic was written with such care that I didn't feel like I was watching from the sidelines. I felt like I was right there - in this battle with them - ready to take up arms so Christian and Emery could be together.

    Needless to say, I appreciate a story that delves deep, gets you by the heart and holds on until the end. And I always get that with Melyssa's books. I knew when I started it would be an emotional ride. And I was right. And I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

    So yeah, I loved this book.

    When I first read the blurb for this book I was completely sold. I had to read it. A step brother romance with a twist? Sign me up. Then I read the prologue and needed more. I was hooked, I needed to know how these two characters came to fall in love and how it all came crashing down. This is a story of young love but a love that is so real and I loved it.

    It’s senior year for Emery, the sassy girl who would rather take pictures and play her guitar than hang out with anyone from her school. Then she literally crashed into the new boy, Christian Cayne and everything changed. They became the best of friends. In the beginning they may have fought the feelings that they had for each other but as time went on they finally admitted to their feelings and they took their friendship a step further. Until they find out that their parents have been dating and are getting married causing their world to be flipped upside down. Emery wants to make her mother happy and therefore pushes Christian away. But Christian will do everything he can to fight for his girl. But will it be enough?

    I loved this book and these characters. Christian had lost his mother a few yers back and seemed to be losing his dad as well. Since his mother’s death his father has basically thrown himself into work. When Christian meets Emery she brings out something in him that hasn’t been there for a long time. He starts to feel like the boy that he once was. He fell for her hard so when their parents upcoming nuptials threatens their relationship he will do everything to fight for his love. And that is one of the many things that I loved about him. Emery is willing to sacrifice her own happiness for her mother’s which I totally understood but at the same time my heart hurt for her because of it. I understood her mother’s issues but I just didn’t agree with them and quite frankly wasn't a big fan of hers.

    Christian and Emery were soul mates,. They were meant to be together. And I know some may say that they are so young, how can you possibly know what true love is at that young age. But I will say that I myself do believe in true love even at the age of eighteen. Maybe it’s because I have bEen with my husband for 23 years, basically since we were 18 years old. So I know when you find the one you don’t wan to let go no matter what age you are. And that is what I loved about this story. These two were only 18 years old but they knew that they belonged together. Their love was true and real and a kind of love that people dream of having. I was rooting for these two all the way. I wanted her mother to understand how strong and real their love was. I wanted Emery to realize that when you find your one true love you never give up no matter who wants you to. You fight for your love and happiness. And thank god for Christian and his father who I had so much respect for. He was an amazing man who loved his son and wanted the best for him. And to be honest I think I may have fallen in love with him...lol

    The Space in Between is a beautiful story of young love. But it is also about sacrifices and doing what makes you happy. This story really captured me from the very beginning until the very end. I fell in love with these characters and wanted them to find their happiness. The end was simply perfect. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

    Christian & Emery are the perfect song

    Christian and Emery's story is sweet, funny, heartbreaking and romantic. It's a story about falling in love, trust and forgiveness and overall believing in the power of love.

    Christian is the new guy at Emery's school and they „bump“ into each other the first day of their senior year. Emery is this sassy girl who is happiest taking picures with her camera.

    „I didn't catch your name!“
    „That was sort of the point!“ She calls back laughing. „Takes a lot more than getting knocked on my ass to get my name!“

    Falling in love is a first for both of them and because of their pasts, both Christian and Emery struggle to accept their feelings in the beginning but once they do, it's beautiful.

    „I'm starting to think that nothing about us is random.“

    „The way Christian looks at me, it's the same as I do him. We're perfectly imperfect.“

    Woven in between the space of Christian and Emerys journey is a sweet second chance lovestory and with it comes the heartbreak.

    „Christian was supposed to be my reward for being smart and doing things differently. Not my biggest nightmare.“

    I was so angry at the person causing them this heartbreak and so sad for the Emery, who felt the need to sacrifice her own happiness, and Christian because he couldn't change Emery's mind.
    But Christian doesn't give up and fights for his girl

    Exactly what the title says.

    I am a psychologist, but I did not have any dedicated evolutionary psychology education within my university training. I bought this book to make up for my own lack of knowledge and to give me a starting point from which to understand evolutionary psychology. And, it did the job I hoped for. Having said this, I think it does assume some psychology knowledge, although not a great deal. This book would be best for people with at least a first-year-level undergraduate psychology education, but other people without formal training would still understand most of its content without much difficulty.

    This book provides exactly what its title promises, a beginner's guide to evolutionary psychology. What exactly makes this a beginner's guide is that it takes the time to explain assumptions, background, and terminology. Happily, the background explanation does not weigh down the text, or unnecessarily delay the appearance of more central content. In addition, there's a useful short glossary. Moreover, the book is clearly designed to promote learning about the content because each chapter concludes with a plain-English summary that reinforces the main ideas.

    Despite its short length (about 165 pages of text) there is quite a lot of interesting content in this book. In particular, I found the research on child development, brain development, social interaction, and moral behaviour very interesting. I think other readers would find the information on close personal relationships (couple relationship / mating) very interesting too - which was one areas of psychology in which I am familiar with evolutionary explanations. Finally, this book provides a different, although possibly complementary, explanation of the evolution of religion than Richard Dawkins's recently top-selling "the God Delusion".

    This book is better than most in that it looks at more than one point of view on certain topics. Good for getting people started on evolutionary psychology, although if you've gotten far enough to read this book some of it will be a little remedial. If you know something about EP already you'll want something more challenging.

    This is a very functional Bible. I like that it's NKJV and having the wide side lined margins for notes if awesome! My church is taking a year to read through the Bible chronologically. This is a great tool for reading, study and note taking. It's hardback but I don't take it further than my desk anyway. Perfect size and well made. I would buy it again.

In addition, Dr. Pauling attempted to correlate the theories with descriptive chemistry, the observed properties of substances, to introduce the student to the multitude of chemical substances and their properties.
    In this extensively revised and updated third edition, the Nobel Prize–winning author maintains an excellent balance between theoretical and descriptive material, although the amount of descriptive chemistry has been decreased somewhat, and the presentation of the subject, especially in relation to the nonmetals, has been revised in such a way as to permit greater correlation with the electronic structure of atoms, especially electronegativity.
    The principles of quantum mechanics are discussed on the basis of the de Broglie wavelength of the electron. The quantized energy levels of a particle in a box are derived by means of a simple assumption about the relation of the de Broglie waves to the walls of the box. No attempt is made to solve the Schrodinger wave equation for other systems, but the wave functions of hydrogen-like electrons are presented and discussed in some detail, and the quantum states for other systems are also covered. Statistical mechanics is introduced before thermodynamics, and the discussion of thermodynamics is based on it. This arrangement reflects the author's belief that beginning students can understand statistical mechanics better than chemical thermodynamics.
    Aimed at first-year college students who plan to major in chemistry or closely related fields, the book is written in a logical, clear and understandable style. In addition, many excellent figures are included, along with numerous problems and 75 pages of appendixes covering such topics as symmetry of molecules and crystals, hybrid bond orbitals, and magnetic properties of substances.

    Linus Pauling: Two-Time Nobel Laureate
    In 1985 Dover reprinted Introduction to Quantum Mechanics with Applications to Chemistry, a well-known older book by Linus Pauling and E. Bright Wilson. This book had been first published fifty years earlier and remarkably still found readers in 1985, and still does today, twenty-five years further on.

    The first edition of Pauling's General Chemistry was a short book of less than 250 pages published in 1944, during World War II. Three years later, it had more than doubled in size to almost 600 pages, and the 1953 edition was over 700 pages. Fifteen years later, for the 1970 edition, it reached its final size and configuration at almost 1,000 pages ― and that is the edition which Dover reprinted in 1988. Dr. Pauling's one request at that time was that we keep the price affordable for students.

    Linus Pauling is of course the only Dover author to win two Nobel prizes, for Chemistry in 1954 and for Peace in 1962; he is the only winner in history of two unshared Nobel Prizes.

    The Best Undergraduate Text ever!

    When Linus Pauling was teaching undergraduates at Caltech, he found that none of the existing undergrad texts would serve his purpose.So he decided to write his own. This was in the 1940's. The result, 'General Chemistry', even after more than 50 years, is one of the best introductions to chemistry at the University level that I know of. I discovered this book in my sophomore year and after that I couldn't put it down. If you really read this book thoroughly, you can probably say that you have an excellent grasp of most of the fundamental principles of chemistry. Pauling's masterly style of explaining the essentials without compromising on information is unmatched. The small, simple calculations that he illustrates in each chapter are enlightening. In addition, the book is lavishly illustrated with beautiful figures by Roger Hayward. Pauling has a special knack of bringing out the flavor of seemingly boring but important topics like thermochemistry and ionic equilibrium. If you want one book that will launch your chemical knowledge on the right trajectory, trust me and buy this one. You will be enlightened by it forever.

    full of insight but eccentric

    This is an interesting, if somewhat dated and eccentric textbook by the man who was probably the leading chemist of the twentieth century. It is full of interesting insight, and written with real flair, so much unlike the typical textbook today produced by the textbook publishing machines.

    Let me give a couple of examples, good and bad, of what makes this book interesting, but also exasperating.

    The book is the only freshman chemistry text I know of that has a derivation of the Boltzmann distribution P ~ e^(-E/kT), a very basic relation in the kinetic theory of gases and in fact in all of statistical physics. The derivation is simpler than most, which makes it a real jewel especially at this level, where most people would think it doesn't belong.

    On the other hand, the section on chemical bonding, which is actually where Pauling made his reputation, is very eccentric, like the author, so much so that it makes the book unsuitable as the sole text for a course. It is all based on sp3 hybrid orbitals. As far as I can tell, sp2 and sp hybrids are never mentioned. With the sp3 story, Pauling is able to account surprisingly well for some systematics of bond lengths. Whether this is fortuitous or not, I don't know, but it is interesting. On the other hand, without sp2 and sp hybrids, he is completely unable to give the standard, very simple, beautiful account of bond angles. A student learning introductory chemistry from this text who then went into organic chemistry would soon be at a disadvantage without knowing the theory of hybrid orbitals that everyone else would get from any of the standard contemporary texts.

    My recommendation: use this text as a very insightful, quirky supplement. The price is certainly right.

    The text that comes closest, in my opinion, in seriousness, if not eccentricity, is the contemporary text by Oxtoby and coauthors. It is too highbrow though for most college introductory chemistry courses.

    Despite its age, still a truly fine book.

    Even though this is NOT the most up to date and technically correct text out there, it is still the best introduction to general chemistry I've seen which is why I rated it 5 stars (I refuse to dock it points for being old, unlike other reviews of other books I've seen). I found a copy at a garage sale, best four bucks I've spent in a while. The format of this book is superb, basing thermodynamics on his discussion of statistical mechanics and QM-he found it makes learning much more smooth, and I happen to agree. If someone would get permission to update this book and not much more, perfect general chem text for a college sequence. For those who'd like more physical and mathematical detail, the appendices are chock full of derivations, integrations and connections to make your heart swoon. Excellent book.
